A Nebraskan in Europe

Before this month, I was quite positive I was American. Nebraska is right in the middle of the United States, right?

After countless Europeans proudly proclaimed they knew Nebraska was in Canada, however, I became confused. Have I really been Canadian all along and nobody told me? I think I’ve been celebrating the wrong Independence Day.

Thrift store sweater enthusiast Desiree Bartels found herself with more Christmas sweaters than she had time to wear this holiday season. In Betty Smith’s “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” 11-year-old Francie Nolan avoids the struggles of childhood by reading. Scout Finch narrates Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird,” in which she learns to understand the world by walking in others’ shoes. Read more here


Carlos Velasco taught himself to use Photoshop in middle school so he could design avatars to use in “Kingdom Hearts” online forums. As his interest in design deepened, he became interested in film and started using Adobe Premiere to create short movies about “The Sims” video game.

I thought moving into my first apartment would be a huge step on the way to adulthood. I don’t have a resident assistant, there aren’t quiet hours and I don’t have to share a bathroom.

My roommates and I coordinated our dishes and kitchen towels. We helped each other come up with innovative recipes incorporating whatever random food was in the fridge. We even spent one night reorganizing our fridge and pantry just for fun. It was everything I’d ever dreamed of.
